What’s the difference between leasehold and freehold?

A good example of leasehold would be the long term leases found in BC. Lasting up to 99 years, it’s common to sell land from Native Reserves, but the Canadian Constitution prohibits these from being sold to anyone other than the Crown so they essentially lease it out for a long length of time.

Freehold is where the owner owns all the land, and excluding any rights for oil and gas, they own all the property rights. Leasehold is when another person, such as a landlord, limits the rights of an owner of a property.
